Dr Paul Sze
is an experienced teacher educator in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of
Other Languages) at the Faculty of Education, CUHK. Among the TESOL methodology
courses he teaches are modules on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has a particular interest in the use
of Web 2.0 tools for promoting collaboration and communication among ESL
learners, and frequently employs blogging, podcasting, wikis, and digital
storytelling in his work in TESOL teacher education. He was the founder
chairman of the test development committee for the Basic Competence Assessment
(primary English), a web-based assessment-for-learning platform for primary
students. He developed the first video-based online lesson observation and discussion
platform in Hong Kong for the professional development of primary ESL teachers.
Dr Sze has piloted a range of CALL activities at schools, including radio drama
projects at 4 secondary schools, a wiki writing project at a secondary school,
and a digital storytelling project at a primary school. He is a volunteer
reader for Librivox, an international audiobooks project. He has a podcast
called Teachers’ Stories, indexed in iTunes, which is a series of meaningful
true stories told by him or by the teachers themselves.
Dr Sze has a
Certificate in Online Education and Training (Language Teaching) from the
University of London Institute of Education, and is a Certified Flipped Learning Educator. His doctoral thesis was on the use
of computer-mediated discussion for developing ESL teachers’ professional
knowledge. He has presented his CALL ideas at conferences in Hong Kong, and in
Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hawaii, Austria, and France.
He is a
Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and a Fellow of the Royal
Society of Arts. He is a three-time recipient of the Faculty’s Exemplary
Teaching Award, and a recipient of the 2005 CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary
Teaching Award.
