Can you write a literature-based term paper?

Dear All

Today is already the 11th of December, and there are only a few days left before Christmas. In the worst-case scenario where you will not be able to try out a CALL lesson, or a series of lessons, or a project, with a group/class of students, you may consider writing a literature-based term paper.

Note that this is only the last resort. Given the nature of the field of CALL and of this course, a literature-based paper which does not report on practical tryouts does not have much value. But if you are not able to try out something practical, then this can be your last resort.

If you do write a literature paper, then try to forge a topic which is manageable, rather than broad. For example:

- Flipped Classroom (too broad)
- Flipped Classroom - for teaching grammar (more specific and manageable)
- Flipped Classroom - tools and activities for pre-class grammar instruction (even more specific).

As to where to look for the literature, those who came to class will know that ERIC, which is under "e-Resources' on the CUHK Library homepage, is the literature database to search. Once you're on the ERIC first-page, type in your search terms.  Two search terms you will need often are 'computer assisted language learning', and 'second language teaching'.

Hope this  helps.

Session 13 (Dec 9): Important Reminders

Dear Folks

Despite the huge stress that you've been under  in the last three months, you have finally made it to the last week of the course (assuming you're now coming to the Dec 16 session). You should give yourself a pat on the back for your perseverance.

Here are a few things to note:

1. Try to bring a tablet to class (iPad, or Android tablet). Many of the tasks in the last session will work best on tablets.

2. Bring the soft copy of a worksheet you have to class (DOC; PDF, etc.). This worksheet can be about reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing, etc.. You will learn how to turn this worksheet into a while-class formative assessment task.

3. I will be showing you how to search the literature to look for relevant references for your term paper.

4. And of course, there is the course evaluation.

See you soon, and hang in there. Christmas is coming.

Session 9 (Nov 11): Creating interactive tasks for reading comprehension

Lesson Plan

A former student's motive for doing e-learning

One of my former students has been trying out various e-learning techniques in the past months. The students she has are the less able ones: some are lacking in self-confidence, while others are newly arrived immigrants. When I probed her underlying purpose in doing e-learning, she related, "... I try my best to help my students learn with fun, so they don't feel bored in my lesson ... so that they can't give themselves an excuse not to pick up a new language. That's only mission I always bear in mind ..."
As I said two days ago, e-learning is not a fad; it's not about using trending apps. E-learning teachers have only one purpose in mind: to enable their students to learn more effectively.

So proud of Jasmine Pun.

Connecting with Ms Zoe Chan

Many of you will have visited Ms Zoe Chan's class blog and got an idea of how she uses it in teaching. To get connected with Zoe: (a) friend her on Facebook (this is acceptable English now); FB name: Zoe Chan; Profile picture: a blue ocean) (b) send her an email at zoe8416@gmail.com https://ttpskggep4.blogspot.hk/

Regarding your blog

So far, only 7 people have got everything in order. They are:

https://misscatherinelo.wordpress.com/
https://amandak21.wordpress.com/
https://carriepang.wordpress.com/
https://cherrylum.wordpress.com/
https://mrivanlaw.wordpress.com/
https://keefermak.wordpress.com/
http://alexlamit.blogspot.hk/

You can go to the page "Your Blogfolios" to see what their blogs are like.

The common problems are as follows:

1. Forgetting to give your blog a name (e.g. Miss Lo's Teaching Blog)
2. Confusing 'Page' with "Post".

A Page is a standalone page. For example, on our class blog, "Paul's Work on CALL" is a Page; "Individual Blogfolios" is another Page.

Posts are cumulative. They keep increasing every time you write a new post.

For your Self-Introduction, use a Page.
For your Reflection at the end of each session, use "Post".

Hence, on your blog, there should be now 1 Page (self-introduction), and 1 Post (Reflection on Session 1).

3. For your Self-Introduction, if you have used a Post instead of a Page, use 'copy and paste', and copy it to a Page that you will have created.

4. If you have created a Page but it doesn't show on the screen, one possible reason is that you have chosen a theme, or a template, which does not show Pages. In that case, just go to the Dashboard, and try another theme or template, to see which one will show your Page.

Other reminders regarding your blog

5. Attach a photo with you in it to your 'Self-Introduction' page.
6. Attach a photo (related to e-learning or blogging; you may look for one on Google, if you don't have one handy) to your first post.

Reminders for Session 2

Please do the following before Session 2:

Task 1: Add a photo with you in it to your "About Me" page.

Task 2: Form groups of 3 to 4 (preferably same school level: Primary or Secondary). Put down the names of the group members and the name of the group on: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10KYhYao32B0wSq6C_6pRfXkOfsME5pw_2gvRue-uRZU/edit?usp=sharing

Task 3: Consider 'liking' the FB Page "Just call me Miss Jenny"
